(CNN) -- Typhoon Morakot lashed Taiwan with high winds and heavy rains Friday as the outer edge of the storm began to move across the island. As of 10:30 a.m. ET, Morakot was about 15 miles (24 miles) from Hualien, on Taiwan's eastern coast, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
It was packing winds of up to148 kmh (92 mph), with gusts up to 185 kmh, the center said.
CNN forecaster Mari Ramos reported that it would take about a day for the storm to move over the island before moving across the Taiwan Strait and toward mainland China. iReport.com: See balcony view of heavy rains
